Pine Timber Plantation
Timber companies owned the land where Buckwalter Place is now.
The land was planted with closely-spaced pine trees that were periodically harvested for paper and lumber production.
Deliberately planting and growing the trees in tight rows ensured the trees would naturally prune themselves to produce straight wood.
A substantial portion of our Lowcountry economy depended on the Southern Yellow Pine and the paper companies in the area.
