Bonaventure -- It means "good fortune" in French, and it was the good fortune of John Mulryne and Josiah Tattnall that created this cemetery. The gravestones and monuments in this cemetery are often large, beautifully carved, and unique. The color in the cemetery tends to look almost monochromatic in the heat of the day. Live oaks festooned with Spanish moss drape carelessly from tree limbs. Narrow dirt roads lead deep into the graveyard that is the final resting place for both the famous and infamous. Of the many noted ghostly apparitions in Savannah, Gracie Watson continues to fascinate. Her marker is located at beautiful Bonaventure Cemetery, surrounded by an iron fence. Inscribed on a stone slab in front of her monument are the words "Little Gracie Watson was born in 1883, the only child of her parents. Her father was manager of the Pulaski Hotels, where the beautiful and charming little girl was a favorite with the guests. Two days before Easter, in April 1889, Gracie died of pneumonia at the age of six. In 1890, when the rising sculptor, John Walz, moved to Savannah, he carved from a photograph this life-sized, delicately detailed marble statue, which for almost a century has captured the interest of all passersby." Visitors are entranced by the beauty of the little child with her button-up boots and her near-to-life sculpture. No story-teller can better relate the mysteries surrounding Gracie Watson than Savannah's Murray M. Silver. This is a ghost story with charm!
