Salt water drowns and saves

CityTrex and Lowcountry author Roger Pinckney combine talents to tell two stories about one constant: the salt water that surrounds us can sustain us but also can take away our loved ones.

The water took away a good man, Willis Frazier, 50, of Hilton Head, during a storm offshore. A river of the same water helps us save our souls.

In this dispatch of Radio Free Daufuskie, Roger Pinckney reports on two current events on our barrier islands.

As part of our new series we're calling "Lowcountry Voices," CityTrex is scouring the region in search of local, "real deal" Gullah storytellers and tales.

Although we're looking for original and compelling Gullah voices to feature in the series, you don't have to be (or pretend to be) Gullah to help us document them, just someone with their discerning ear to the ground.

This project is motivated by the realization that most Gullah stories known to the larger American public have been filtered through the literary imaginations of non-Gullah writers and that actual audio recordings of these tales in local Gullah vernacular are few and far between.
We're calling on you to help us begin reversing this trend.
Whether you are a Gullah storyteller yourself or whether you have been fortunate enough to be in the right place at the right time when a Gullah friend or neighbor shared a story, we want to hear from you.

Who knows, perhaps some of the Gullah folks who where were around when Lydia Parrish, Zora Neale Hurston, Mary Granger and others were collecting stories, songs, and recipes are still out there somewhere today. If they are, one thing is for sure, they're not getting any younger!
Help us find them so that we can begin documenting and preserving their voices for future generations.

The President of the Beaufort, SC non-profit Friends of the Library tells us about their 2012 Books Sandwiched In season, what they've accomplished so far, and the schedule of Monday book reviews.

In 2011 the podcasts were getting over 2,000 weekly listeners.
Of these, over 700 each week were from Los Angeles, California. So, looks like interest in Southern culture is alive and well in Hollywood!
Another example of how New Media initiatives and clever online promotion have powerful results!

free walking tour of nature trail

The Greenway Trail at Buckwalter Place in Bluffton, SC is built for nature lovers.
Listen to locals share their stories in this free nature trail interpretation.

Close to a Publix grocery store (clean restrooms and quick food) and with easy access from I-95 and the SAV/HHI airport, it's a perfect place to walk your dog and stretch your legs.

Here is an intro to the trailhead. Updated seasonally by naturalists, photographers, and local storytellers, load this app onto your smartphone or iPod and take it with you as you walk along.

Mobile media... get it to go:

or click CityTrex.com/Trail from your mobile browser

Here's a 10 minute sample of the trail interpretation.

Points of interest you'll hear in this app:

Stormwater Lagoons
Protect our wetlands, rivers, and creeks by filtering rainwater.

Freshwater Wetlands
Edible plants and plants with interesting uses.
One of the most species-rich habitats in Hilton Head or Bluffton, South Carolina.
Perfect for aquatic vertebrates such as frogs, salamanders, and sirens.
Aquatic plants consist of lizard's tail and pickerelweed.

Hardwood Bottom
Over 20 tree species form a dense thicket, providing for wildlife.

Escape Cover
Allows birds and mammals to get away from predators.

Pine Timber Plantation
Timber companies owned the land where Buckwalter Place is now.
The land was planted with closely-spaced pine trees that were periodically harvested for paper and lumber production.
Deliberately planting and growing the trees in tight rows ensured the trees would naturally prune themselves to produce straight wood.
A substantial portion of our Lowcountry economy depended on the Southern Yellow Pine and the paper companies in the area.
